I Tried Colouring Like the Stencils… Here’s What Happened (Happy Blossoms / Altenew)

by Kylie

Hi everyone! Today’s card is another one made with Altenew’s Build-A-Garden: Happy Blossoms set. I really love this stamp set! The design is lovely, and it is easy to make quick, pretty cards. You can see other cards I’ve made with this set here, here and here. For this card, I wanted to colour the image with Copic Markers. I decided to use the coordinating Layering Stencils as my guide. I thought it might be a good way to learn how to colour flowers differently. Basically, I added colours based on the stencils, but used markers instead.

Trying to Colour Like the Layering Stencils

I stamped the floral image, coloured it with Copics, then added some Wink of Stella over the flowers for a sparkly finish. The card base was die-cut with the Stitched Greenery background die (Stampin’ Up!®). I next added a Postage Rectangles (Lawn Fawn) die-cut panel. The coloured floral image was die-cut and popped up on top with foam adhesive.

It was definitely an interesting challenge trying to follow the shading and colour placement of the layering stencils. I found myself colouring a little differently than I normally would, especially with where I placed highlights and darker shadows. Some parts worked really well, while others felt a bit more forced than what feels natural for my usual style.

Here’s the card…

While it was a fun experiment to try and colour in the same way as the stencils, I think it would be easier to either just stick with the layering stencils, or colour as I would normally. Have you ever tried to colour in the same way as a colouring stencil?

Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks so much for stopping by!
