A Last Minute Birthday Card (Mice Tools / Lawn Fawn)

by Kylie

Hi everyone! Yesterday was Al’s birthday. You’d think I would be all over ensuring his card was ready well in advance of his big day. Truthfully, I wasn’t! It was a mad panic the night before (and I had to keep shooing him out of my craft room). My poor craft room looks worse for wear after my efforts too. Anyone want to come and help me sort it out? Oh, I wish!

Part of the reason for the mad panic is that I decided Al’s card HAD to be made with the new Mice Tools line from Lawn Fawn. As they were only recently released, I had them express posted to me, but that still didn’t leave me much time. Seriously, how cute are those mice? I love them!

Taking the Pressure Off

I was really starting to feel the pressure when making this card, and there were a few things I did that helped my process. First, I used some of the colour combinations from Lawn Fawn’s Intro video for this stamp set. While I didn’t have all the same colours, it gave me a good head start. Secondly, I remembered seeing a card by Mindy Eggen where she used the Lawn Fawn Cobblestone Stencil to create a floor, and I loved it, so it made it onto my card. You can see her original (and AMAZING) card here. The final help came in the form of a pep talk from my crafty friend Linda. Don’t be afraid to go to friends for advice, especially when you are stuck in your own head!

Creating the Card

There are so many pieces that went into the making of this cute card. The patterned paper was from a now-retired Stampin’ Up!® paper pack, which I embossed with the Metal Plate 3D Embossing Folder (also from Stampin’ Up!®). I swiped some Manatee ink over the top to give a little more definition to the pattern.

I used the same ink to create the Cobblestone pattern. I love the softness. I then die-cut it using a Stitched Rectangle die from Stampin’ Up!®. I cut another panel to use as the walls. I sponged on a little Tumbled Glass to tie in with the colour of the overalls of the mice. This panel was then adhered to the flooring panel. I stamped the greeting (from the Hay There stamp set) and layered it on some blue cardstock. As I knew I was going to pop up some of the mice, I decided to adhere this panel directly to the card base.

The mice were fun to colour in with my copic markers, and once they were die cut, it was fun playing around with their positions on the card. I adhered all the mice in ” the back” directly to the card panel, and then popped up the rest with foam tape. I also used the All the Speech Bubbles set to add the fun “This is Not a Drill” sentiment, as I thought Al would love the pun! The final step was… You guessed it: Wink of Stella to add a little shimmer.

Here’s the card…

If you were wondering, Al DID love his card and even asked me to make a Get Well Soon card for a colleague using these stamps. It was such a relief to know the card was a hit!

Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks so much for stopping by!
