Hi everyone! I was sorting through some craft supplies yesterday and came across the Hero Arts Rub-Ons I had purchased to use with their Miss Detective range last year. I’d made a few cards using the stamp bundle but never touched the rub-ons! Why? They were expensive, I could only use them once, and I was scared I’d mess them up. Who else has had those thoughts before?
So instead of using them, I put them away. A year later, they were still untouched.
What’s the point of buying craft supplies if we never actually use them?
So I pulled them out and made four new cards. Woot woot!
Could I have used them better, or in a more creative way? Maybe. But if I’d waited until I came up with the perfect idea, they’d probably still be sitting untouched in their original packaging.
I used nearly all of the rub-on sheets in the package to create backgrounds for four cards. I think they look amazing. I am so happy I used them.
Making the cards…
Miss Detective was stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and coloured with Copic Markers. I used the same colour combination for all four cards (see the graphic below).
To create her cap and outfit, I used paper piecing. For two cards, I stamped the images directly onto patterned paper, fussy-cut the pieces I needed and adhered them over the coloured image.
For the other two cards, I used the coordinating Houndstooth Layering Stencil to create my own patterned paper using ink blending. I then stamped the clothing pieces onto the stencilled cardstock, fussy-cut them and adhered them directly to the coloured image.
The magnifying glass was created using gold foil, vellum and Copic Markers. I used E29, E27 and E23 for the handle. I wanted a nice crisp black sentiment, so I stamped it with Versafine Onyx Black before die-cutting it with the coordinating die. The sub-sentiment was white heat-embossed onto black cardstock and trimmed to size.
Even though I used the same stamped image on every card, simply changing the rub-on background and paper-pieced clothing gave each design a different feel.

I really enjoyed making these cards, and I’m so happy with how they turned out. More importantly, I’m happy I finally stopped saving those rub-ons “for the perfect project” and actually used them.
Do you do this too? Do you have supplies tucked away because they’re too nice to use or you’re worried you’ll waste them?
Consider this your little nudge to pull them out and create something. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Making something is so much better than letting beautiful supplies sit unopened in a drawer for another year, or longer.
Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks so much for stopping by!
